A smart garage door opener connects to home Wi-Fi so it can be monitored and controlled from a phone. Chamberlain's myQ platform sends real-time alerts when the garage is opened, closed, or left open, while its Security+ 2.0 technology selects a code from 100 billion encrypted rolling codes on each press. The standard opener safety rules still apply on top of these connected features.
Wi-Fi and app control
The defining smart feature is remote visibility. Chamberlain highlights myQ smartphone integration, promising real-time, wide-angle monitoring and smart access in the myQ app so a user never misses what matters.
Beyond monitoring, Chamberlain describes its smart models as having smart home technology built in, providing a full suite of advanced access and safety features. This lets a homeowner check and operate the door from anywhere with a connection rather than only from inside the garage.
Rolling-code radio security
The radio link between remote and opener is protected by rolling codes. Chamberlain's Security+ 2.0 technology uses a unique code every time the remote button is pressed, selecting one code from 100 billion encrypted rolling codes.
Because a different encrypted code is sent on each use rather than a repeated signal, Security+ 2.0 guards against interception and replay of the door command. Chamberlain adds that the enhanced radio technology selects the strongest frequency every time, which virtually eliminates interference from other technologies.
Battery backup and video
Connected openers often bundle resilience and camera features. Chamberlain offers battery backup on select models so a homeowner can get in and out of the garage when the power is out.
Chamberlain also integrates video into certain openers, adding remote monitoring and access control through the myQ ecosystem. These features extend the opener from a simple motor into a monitored access point for the home.
Standard opener safety still applies
Smart features sit on top of the same safety hardware every opener carries. DASMA notes that since 1993, all openers manufactured for the U.S. must include a second safety reversing feature such as photoelectric eyes, and that these photo eyes should not be installed higher than six inches above the garage floor.
DASMA also advises mounting wall push buttons at least five feet above the floor to restrict access, and warns that if a door does not reverse readily after contacting an obstruction, the sensitivity adjustment may be set improperly. A connected opener does not replace these checks; it adds to them.
