How to read this comparison
Brand-level specs are only meaningful when you compare like models. Each brand sells a full ladder from single-layer builder doors to premium polyurethane triple-layer doors, so a premium Clopay and a builder Amarr are not comparable, and neither are their reverse. Read R-value carefully too: manufacturers may publish a calculated door section R-value rather than a tested installed U-factor, and DASMA says those two numbers are not comparable. Treat everything below as manufacturer-published figures for specific product lines, not universal brand claims.
What Clopay publishes
Clopay builds its steel doors in one, two, or three-layer construction across the Classic, Modern Steel, Gallery, and Bridgeport lines. Its premium insulation, branded Intellicore, is a proprietary polyurethane foam injected into the door that expands to fill the structure.
On performance, Clopay lists insulated door R-values up to 18.4 with Intellicore. The brand also publishes a sound test comparing a traditional polystyrene door at 96 decibels against an Intellicore door at 80 decibels.
What Amarr publishes
Amarr's Designer's Choice line is built in triple-layer construction with 1-3/8 inch or 2 inch polyurethane insulation, and lists a door R-value range of 13.35 to 19.40. The heavy-gauge steel is coated in a five-layer paint system.
Amarr publishes color and noise options for the same line. It offers eight factory paint colors plus access to more than 800 Sherwin-Williams colors through Color Zone, and states its Quiet Door option reduces operation noise by up to 38 percent.
Where they differ on paper
On published R-value ceilings the two lines are close: Clopay lists up to 18.4 with Intellicore, while Amarr's Designer's Choice range tops out at 19.40, though the exact model and measurement basis behind each number matter. Both rely on injected or foamed polyurethane for their premium doors.
The brands frame quiet operation differently. Clopay publishes an absolute decibel comparison between polystyrene and Intellicore doors, while Amarr publishes a relative reduction of up to 38 percent for its Quiet Door option. Because these are measured and stated differently, they cannot be directly equated, which is exactly why matching specific models and measurement methods matters more than the brand name.
